About Us
History OF Fan Man Lighting
Fan Man Inc. was founded by Steve Stillman in 1983. The very first Fan Man store was around 300 sq ft and located in an indoor mall in Plymouth, MN. By February 1989, when the current owner Jason Stevens was hired, Steve had added his brothers Jeff and Bruce along with six total stores in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota.
1989-1994 Jason spent time at all eight locations (Including: Plymouth, Inver-Grove Heights, Brooklyn Park, New Brighton, Woodbury, Oakdale, Eden Prarie and Burnsville) working in sales and in-home ceiling fan service. In 1995 Jason was promoted to manager of the Burnsville store and service coordinator for the south metro area of Minneapolis. In 1996 Fan Man added Home Lighting products to their offerings along with much larger stores and one of the first online Ceiling Fan and Home Lighting stores called Lamp Depot.
2001 Jack Metcalf was hired as co-manager with Jason as the company expanded into full-fledged Home Lighting showrooms. Jack was a man of many talents. A decorated Air Force officer in Vietnam who went on to be an air traffic controller and spokesman for the union until he was fired by Ronald Reagan. Jack then worked for Thompson Lighting and Budget Power stores as a buyer and import coordinator for over 20 years before teaming up with Jason at The Fan Man.
In October of 2007 Fan Man Inc. fell at the beginning of the recession. Jack and Jason teamed up to purchase what was left of the Burnsville store and continued the company under the name Fans and Lighting Minnesota LLC filing a DBA as Fan Man Lighting. In 2012 the store was moved to its current location in Apple Valley, MN.
Today’s company consists of Jack’s son Jack Jr. and daughter Beth. Along with Jason and Beth’s son Alex. We lost Jack Metcalf Sr. to a heart attack in December of 2017.
We are a family-operated business with over 30 years of experience!
