Fan FAQ’s

Every brand has different quality levels in their ceiling fans regardless of name! Some of the history: Emerson and Hunter have been around since the late 1800’s. Casablanca started in the mid 1970’s during the energy crisis. Casablanca bought their motors from Emerson for many years. Hunter now owns Casablanca Fan Co.

Definition of a ceiling fan:
A ceiling fan is essentially an appliance wrapped in furniture. The motor will vary in size and quality. The housings offer many styles and colors to choose from. Blades can be made of particle board with wall paper for color, or real furniture grade hardwood veneers. Many ceiling fans will offer choices in blade finish and housing colors. We enjoy teaching the real difference in a ceiling fan. We like to compare model to model versus brand to brand.

The motor is the most important part of any ceiling fan:
The newest motor is DC(direct current). DC motors are extremely efficient using only 25-30 watts on high speed. DC motors vary based on diameter and thickness of their copper windings.
Emerson and Casablanca used to offer, and made their name on, what we call a “Stack” motor (XLP-2000 Casablanca, K55-XL Emerson). In our opinion, this was the best motor offered in the industry. The “Stack” motors are more open and cooling than the common motors. This motor has been discontinued by most manufacturers.
Hunter made their name on the Hunter “Original” (a heavy oil bath motor that is hard to find these days).
All of these brands, and others, offer the most common motor called a “Pancake” or “Direct Drive”. This motor varies considerably in size. They are more effected by heat build up than the “Stack” motor. Heat build up can shorten the life span of your components or cause windings to loosen over time causing a “Hum” or vibration sound in the motor. The motor will determine how quiet the fan is over time, and how much air the ceiling fan will move(motor size determines blade angle or pitch). It’s not an absolute that any ceiling fan will develop a sound. It all depends on how much you run that ceiling fan. Larger motors hold up better and are more efficient.

Warranty:
Most ceiling fans have a warranty that says “Limited Life”. When you read the actual warranty the “Motor” is warranted for life and the components are limited to one year. It is very rare we see a problem with the motor in a fan. Sound is not covered under any warranty! The industry knows it’s more likely if you didn’t spend much on the fan. You’ll throw it away and buy another one. On Emerson and Casablanca ceiling fans we can get parts for most repair issues. Fan Man Lighting has over 30 years experience, in ceiling fan and home lighting sales and service! We are very familiar with the brands we carry, as well as the ones we choose not to carry at this time. Please call if you have any questions dealing with ceiling fans and home lighting.

Old Versa-Touch remote stopped working (not fan, checked by 2nd VT remote, or battery)
I have an unused old Comfort-Touch remote.
Can this remote be used in place of the Versa-Touch? Thank You

    1. Unfortunately, that will not work. Comfort-Touch is for a very high end motor. Versa-Touch is a step down in motor size. We have no work around system for Versa-Touch yet.
